Retaining Ring Application Examples
Air Hose Nozzle
Single turn retaining ring fits tightly onto the groove of plastic air vent housing. Snap ring ends are dimensioned close together providing a complete 360 ring support.
Right-Angle Gear
The snap rings secure bearings by providing a removable shoulder in the bore. This simplifies the design and it replaces costly flanged end-plates.
Roller Bearing
Designed especially for flexing in a shallow groove, this retaining ring holds the needle bearing cage assembly in the bearing housing. A previously unreliable operation of roll forming the housing was eliminated when this Smalley snap ring was incorporated into the design.
Pulley
Retaining rings provide 360 degree side walls on both sides of the timing belt pulley. Design eliminates costly pressed-on stamped side walls. For easy belt replacement one ring can easily be remove.

Spiral retaining rings have many great benefits for the ID/OD Lock, some of which include concealed fastening, no required assembly tooling, and a 360-degree rotational capacity. With a Smalley Spiral Retaining Ring, the application is tamper-proof and aesthetically pleasing.
In this featured application, the ring is initially installed in the housing groove. When the mating component in the assembly is added, the ring compresses into the groove. The groove is deep enough for the rings radial wall to fit into as the component slides into position. Finally, when the grooves meet, the ring snaps into the shaft groove (groove depth equals 1/2 the rings radial wall) while still in the housing groove.
Rotary Union
The union cross section of the spiral retaining ring allows the snap ring to be installed in the assembly without interfering with mating components.
